The Olympic Flame by Panagiotis Karousos is the second part of the Hellenic Tetralogy: "The Dawn of Civilization" (Prometheus - Olympic Flame - Alexander the Great - The Light of Christianity).
The opera relates to the myth of Heracles and the establishment of the Olympic Games, depicting the greatness of human spirit and foresight of the Greeks. It is clearly proven and accepted that Western civilization reputable evolution is based on the philosophical works of Greek antiquity and that we are all descendants of the civilization and culture of that era.
The composer with the Olympic Flame gives us the fundamental concept behind this ancient Greek ritual of touch.
The flame as delivered on stage during the Olympic Games is basically a commemoration to the ancient Prometheus act that was stolen from the gods by the Titan and handed over to the people - the flame of knowledge, from which was born the culture and civilization.
In Greek antiquity was a religious ritual designed to bring people closer to the Gods.
The second act of the work based on the tragedy "Trachiniae" by Sophocles.
On Trachiniae, the suffering and mortality of people represented by Deianeira, which she is expiated by her tragic death. Nessus the centaur tries to steal Deianira from Heracles. Angry, Heracles shoots him with his arrows dipped in the poisonous blood of the Lernaean Hydra. Thinking of revenge, Nessus gives Deianira his blood-soaked tunic before he dies, telling her it will "excite the love of her husband".

Deianira, remembering Nessus' words, gives Heracles the bloodstained shirt. However, it is still covered in the Hydra's blood from Heracles' arrows, and this poisons him, tearing his skin and exposing his bones.
At the end of the opera, Prometheus comes after the sacrament of reconciliation with Zeus, and in an apotheosis, Heracles rises to Olympus. It is the reconciliation of people with the God in times of demigods.
The Olympic Flame is an important work of Greek mythology and philosophy, which contributes to the global modern culture.
Panagiotis Karousos has composed music of romantic exaltation inspired by the Ancient Greek beauty (Kallos), as the central idea of the Ancient Greek Spirit, with suffused high lyricism and exuberant romantic fervor. After presenting the premiere of the opera in Canada "Olympic Flame" was evaluated as a work of a genius mind of melodies, comparable to the great works of the classical repertoire.

The opera premiered in Montreal, Canada at the majestic Notre-Dame Basilica in 2005 and in New York in 2007. In Greece the opera presented in the Festival of Papagou 2013, and in Aegina Theatrical Festival Summer 2013.

A few words about the work and its creator

The opera Prometheus by Panagiotis Karousos is a lyric drama based on the tragedy of Aeschylus Prometheus Bound translated by John Gryparis. 

The myth of Prometheus is always relevant and instructive brings man face to face in front of the dilemma of revolution over in each historical eras tyrannical power, or the destructive passive attitude. The philanthropist Prometheus as the first partisan revolt, for the sake of the people in power of Zeus, was trying to exterminate the human race. The composition follows an expressionistic lyrical tone, messages of Aeschylus for humanist Titan Prometheus, which the echoes of the myth comes to us, affecting through Christianity the fourth of today's humanity. The Karousos opera "Prometheus" use neoromantic traditional harmony and counterpoint to consolidate the lyrical style of Aeschylus. The Greek-Canadian composer Mr. Panagiotis Karousos, excels in Canada from which it has been awarded for his contribution to art.

The opera was represented with a government grant in 1996 in French at theatre Maisonneuve of Place des Arts.

Prometheus is the first work of the Greek Tetralogy, focusing on the flame, which is the ancient Greek spirit. In Prometheus, the flame has the mystical form, at the second opera The Olympic Flame, the form of civilization, in Alexander the Great the civilizing enlargement of mind, and finally at the Light of Christianity or The Fire of Catharsis the purifying flame. In April 2008 Panayiotis Karousos presented Prometheus in New York in English under the direction of maestro Grant Gilman, and in November 2008 the production of Prometheus went to Washington DC.

In Greece, Prometheus presented in the Municipal Theatre of Holargos (November 2010), at the Municipal Theatre of Argostoli, Kefalonia (July 2011), at the Mount Olympus festival (Summer 2011), at the Hellenic Literary Society (January 2012), and at the Parnassos Concert Hall (February and March 2012).

Mr. Karousos also has been awarded by the Federal Government of Canada for his works Liberty Symphony and Piano Concerto, and from the City of Montreal for his Suite Montrealaise.

Λίγα λόγια για το έργο:

Ο μουσουργός Παναγιώτης Καρούσος χρησιμοποιεί στην μουσική του την Πυθαγόρειο θεωρία της αρμονίας των σφαιρών. Σύμφωνα με την Πυθαγόρεια διδασκαλία οι ήχοι των ουράνιων σωμάτων συνθέτουν μία κοσμική μουσική, γιατί οι αποστάσεις και οι ταχύτητες των πλανητών και των απλανών αστέρων διέπονται από τους ίδιους αριθμητικούς λόγους που παράγουν και τη συμφωνία των ήχων.
Η ενορχήστρωση του Παναγιώτη Καρούσου είναι βαγκνερικής τεχνικής. Η σύνθεση ακολουθεί, ακουστικά, σε έναν εξπρεσιονιστικό λυρικό τόνο, τα μηνύματα του Αισχύλου για τον ανθρωπιστή τιτάνα Προμηθέα, που οι απόηχοι του μύθου του φτάνουν σε εμάς, επηρεάζοντας (σε μια παραλλαγή του μέσω του ιουδαιοχριστιανισμού), το ένα τέταρτο της σημερινής ανθρωπότητας. Ο Καρούσος χρησιμοποιεί περισσότερο την σύγχρονη, δωδεκαφωνική κλίμακα για τις συνθέσεις του σε σύμπτυξη με άλλες μοντέρνες τεχνικές όπως ο μινιμαλισμός και η διατονική πολυφωνία. Στην όπερα “Προμηθέας” χρησιμοποίησε την παραδοσιακή νεορομαντική αρμονία και αντίστιξη  για να εμπεδώσει το ύψιστο λυρικό ύφος του Αισχύλου. Σύμφωνα με τον δημιουργό Παναγιώτη Καρούσο η όπερα βρίσκεται πιο κοντά στην Αρχαία Ελληνική Τραγωδία, και το ιερό δράμα που ως λυρικό τραγουδιόνταν «τράγων ωδή», από τις μοντέρνες παρουσιάσεις αρχαίας τραγωδίας.

Johanne Patry, mezzo-soprano

La mezzo-soprano Johanne Patry se produit régulièrement sur les scènes Québécoises. Cette année Madame Patry a présenté deux concerts avec les Productions Zerf : un concert d'airs d'opéra ainsi que « Le pouvoir et la gloire » : un concert de chants sacrés ou elle était la co-directrice musicale. Elle a aussi collaboré avec Panayoti Karoussos dans son nouvel opéra : « La lumière du christianisme » qui sera produit lors de la prochaine saison. Durant l’été 2010, elle interprétera le rôle de Thérèse dans l'opéra Lucas et Cécile de Quesnel. ( FestivalOpéra de Saint-Eustache)

Ses récentes prestations incluent l'opéra "Alexandre le grand" de Panayoti Karoussos (octobre 2007) , "Les nuits d'été" d'Hector Berlioz, le rôle de Baba du "Medium" de Menotti et le cycle de mélodies rarement présenté sur scène : "The Confession Stone", du compositeur Canadien Robert Fleming. Dans le domaine de l’oratorio, Madame Patry a été soliste du "Requiem" de Mozart , le "Magnificat" et la "Passion" de Bach ainsi que le Messie de Handel.

Madame Patry est l'une des fondatrices de l'acclamé trio Amaryllis, ou elle allie ses habiletés vocales et instrumentales (guitare classique, flûte à bec) dans l'interprétation de la musique ancienne.

David Bouchard, violoncelliste

David Bouchard est un talentueux violoncelliste âgé de 21 ans. Il a commencé l’apprentissage de son instrument à l’âge de 12 ans, à l’école secondaire Mgr-A.-M.-Parent, sur la rive-sud de Montréal. Il fut sous la tutelle de Vincent Bernard durant cinq ans avant d’être admis au conservatoire de musique de Montréal, en 2007, dans la classe de Denis Brott. Il a entamé, en 2009, son troisième cycle avec Carole Sirois. Durant son passage au secondaire, il fit parti de l’orchestre à cordes de Mgr-A.-M.-Parent, ce qui l’ammena à Orlando et à Boston, où l’orchestre remporta la première place aux prestigieux concours Heritage Festival et Festival of Gold. Aussi, il fut dirigé par Guy Fouquet, durant un an, à l’orchestre à cordes du conservatoire. Depuis 2005, ce jeune musicien fait parti de l’orchestre symphonique des jeunes de la Montégérie, dirigée par Luc Chaput. Il y occupe la place de violoncelle solo depuis juin 2009. De plus, depuis trois ans, ce violoncelliste fait parti de l’orchestre symphonique du conservatoire, sous la direction de Raffi Armenian. David possède déjà d’importantes expériences d’orchestres avec lesquels il eu la chance de jouer aux États-Unis, en Allemagne, en Autriche en Italie et en République Tchèque. Entre-temps, il fut aussi dirigé par Jean-François Rivest, Kent Nagano, Ton Koopman, David Zafer, Raymond Dessaints, Philippe Ménard, Marc David et Joseph Rescigno.. Parce qu’il souhaite toujours s’améliorer davantage, David s’est perfectionné dans plusieurs camps musicaux, d’abord au Toronto summer music, au camp musical des Laurentides, au camp de l’orchestre réseau du conservatoire et au Young Artist Program du Centre National des arts à Ottawa ou il a eu la chance de jouer pour Pinchas Zukerman et Hans-Jorgen Jensen. e, il étudia aussi la musique de chambre avec les réputés Anne Robert et Lambert Chen et il monta un répertoire très diversfié avec les pianistes Suzanne Blondin et Sandra Murray. David est aussi cofondateur de l'Orchestre Philharmonique des Musiciens Étudiants de Montréal.

Claudette Denys, pianiste

La pianiste Claudette Denys - Teevin a commencé sa carrière dans la ville de Québec et bientôt reconnu comme l'un des plus grand pianiste accompagnatrice du Canada et pianiste-coach et professeur au Conservatoire de Musique du Québec à Montréal (CMQM). Mme Claudette Denys avait accompagner et présenter à la télévision nationale du Canada CBC chaque semaine un opéra avec piano et voix, des opera connue comme La Traviata de Verdi, Pelléas et Mélisande de Debussy, et même la Walkyrie de Wagner. Il a collaboré avec les plus grands noms de l'opéra. Il a fait des concerts à travers le Canada avec le grand ténor et partenaire de Maria Callas, John Vickers, le célèbre basse Hans Hotter, la contralto l'origine grecque Tatiana Troyanos, le baryton Louis Quilico, et la soprano Virginia Zeani. Elle est également unique Vocal Coach, et elle a préparé le ténor Luciano Pavarotti au concert de Noël donné par le célèbre Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal et diffusée dans le monde entier. Pendant quarante ans, a été la pianiste officiel de la préparation des chanteurs de l'Opéra de Montréal.

En tant que professeur de piano a enseigné des chanteurs d'opéra et l'accompagnement de musique de chambre et d’instruments symphonique à l'Université McGill, à l’Université de Montréal, au Centre des Arts de Banff, au Conservatoire de Musique du Québec à Montréal et à l’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal.

Elle etait la pianiste officiel des masterclass de Pierre Bernac, de Raoul Jobin, de Heinz Rehfuss, de DanielFerro, de Rose Brampton, de Martin Isepp, de Diana Soviero et de Phyllis rideau. Mme Claudette Denys a accompagné des artistes d'opéra à des nombreux opéras dans le monde entier en récitals de chant, à Rio de Janeiro, Budapest, Toulouse, Genève, Sienne, Montréal, Monte-Carlo, Paris, New York, Toronto, et à Londres qu'elle serait obtenue les meilleurs des critiques et souvent voler la vedette.

Prometheus by Panayoti Karousos in Greece

Monday November 29, 2010. Cholargos Municipal Amphitheater.

The opera Prometheus of the Greek-Canadia composer Panayoti Karousos was presented in Greece at the Municipal Amphitheater of Cholargos, Athens Greece. The presentation was successful and impressed the audience with great lyricism, strong melodic lines and thick harmony.

At the demanding and very dramatic title role of Prometheus the well known baritone Ilias Tiliakos gave all his powers vocal and physical to achieve a magnificent result.

As Io, soprano Helen Bouki – Agiomirgianaki gave a dramatic performance with big emotion and strong musicality. She impresses audiences with emotional acting throughout the difficult role.

Bass Sotirios Sideris has vocal potentials for an eventual future stronger performance.

The part of Ocean was more for his voice than the heroic Zeus.

Tenor George Zografos as Hermes performed his only aria with a strong and beautiful voice. Mezzo-soprano Tatiana Magina performed with seriousness three different characters, the very dark silent Violence, the lyrical Oceanide, and the strong Goddess Athena. The musical direction of pianist Petros Bouras was acceptable.

A standing ovation crowned the Greek Premiere of the opera after the Canadian and USA successful passed representations.
